Responding to US President Donald Trump’s warnings to `destroy` North Korea, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho earlier this week declared that he considered those statements a `declaration of war`.

Pyongyang also threatened to shoot down US bombers and considered it a right of `self-defense`.

Experts warn that this tense war of words has made the risk of miscalculations by the US and North Korea due to the sides misunderstanding the other’s intentions the highest ever.

The Washington Post quoted expert opinions pointing out possible paths to such miscalculations.

North Korea tested a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific

North Korea announced it could test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced last week that he would respond with the strongest force against the US.

This idea is similar to South Africa’s in the 1980s, only in a completely different context.

To pressure the United States, South Africa is said to have developed a nuclear arsenal and by 1989 completed a bomb using enriched uranium.

Experts warn that if North Korea really pursues its plan to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific, the consequences will be very unpredictable.

The US tries to shoot down North Korean missiles

Since the 1980s, the US military has spent about $200 billion to develop the ability to shoot down ballistic missiles.

However, shooting down enemy missiles is never easy, the GMD system rarely intercepts accurately, while Aegis and THAAD have better test results but have never been used in real combat conditions.

In theory, the US can use THAAD and Aegis to shoot down North Korean missiles over the Pacific Ocean.

Furthermore, it could also lead to miscalculations on the North Korean side if the interception was considered an act of war.

The messages are not fully understood

A North Korean broadcaster announced a missile test by the country.

One of the factors that can lead to miscalculation is not understanding the nature of North Korea’s statements.

In early August, North Korea threatened to cause fire to cover the waters around the US island of Guam.

The most important thing is how the US government understands that message.

The White House will either be under further pressure to find a diplomatic solution, or in the opposite direction, use military measures against North Korea.

Although the exchange of words is unlikely to lead to a nuclear conflict between the US and North Korea, it could further escalate tensions.
