Reuters reported that Israel on December 13 announced its largest combat loss in a day since late October after an ambush in Gaza.

Accordingly, Israel said 10 of its soldiers died in the past 24 hours, including a colonel commanding a forward base and a lieutenant colonel commanding a regiment.

The army said most of the soldiers died in the Shejaia district of northern Gaza City, where the Israeli side was ambushed while trying to rescue another group of soldiers who had attacked Hamas in a building.

An Israeli military official said the country had to pay `a very heavy price` in the incident.

Intense fighting is ongoing in both north and south Gaza, a day after the United Nations passed a resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the army would continue fighting despite international pressure for a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Hamas declared that Israeli forces could never subdue Gaza: `The longer Israel stays, the greater the death rate and loss will be.`

In a televised address, Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh said any future agreement in Gaza without Hamas was unrealistic.

According to Gaza health authorities, at least 18,608 people have been killed and 50,594 injured in Gaza after intensive Israeli attacks since October 7, the majority of whom are civilians.

Israeli warplanes are again bombing across Gaza and aid organizations say winter rains have worsened living conditions for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who sleep outdoors in makeshift tents

At a tent camp in Rafah, Yasmin Mhani said she woke up at night to find her youngest child, just 7 months old, soaking wet.

`This is the fifth place we’ve had to move to, running from place to place, with nothing but a T-shirt on,` she said, hanging her wet clothes outside her tent.

Since the week-long ceasefire collapsed in early December, Israeli forces have expanded their ground campaign from the northern Gaza Strip into the south with an assault on the main southern city of Khan Younis.

Hospitals in northern Gaza have largely stopped operating completely.

Dr Chris Hook, a British doctor deployed from the medical charity MSF at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, told Reuters: `Doctors, including myself, are stepping over his body.

Israel said it has encouraged increased aid to Gaza through the Egyptian border.
